In most cases where insurance companies are paying for an air ambulance transport, they usually have their case managers make all of the arrangements. However, if you are seeking an air ambulance transport, you can arrange to have your insurance company pay for it if it will fit their guidelines.
Insurance companies usually will pay to take a patient to the closest hospital that will treat them. In the majority of cases, insurance will not pay to relocate a patient if the patient can be treated in a closer facility. This is true even if the patient is not where he/she lives and/or where his/her family lives.
The first thing you should do if you are trying to get your insurance to pay for an air ambulance is get a copy of your full policy.
In most cases, you may need to get your doctor to write a letter of medical necessity. It has to have the two words "medical necessity" in it.
