Does Medicare cover air ambulance service?

It is usually difficult to get Medicare to pay for an air ambulance. This is because the circumstances in which Medicare will pay for an air ambulance are not common. The following is not an official explanation of Medicare rules, but rather a general guideline. Medicare will pay an allowable amount under the following conditions:

The patient is being transported to the closest hospital that can treat him/her. A letter of medical necessity from the attending doctor is helpful.
