A medflight is a private charter winged aircraft that has onboard emergency medical kits and personnel. Jets, twin engine, and turbo-prop planes are all equipped with a stretcher and a cross between an intensive care unit and coronary care unit. Jets tend to fly about 500 mph while twins and turbo props will travel at about 200 and 300 mph, respectively. These aircrafts are all approved by the Federal Aviation Administration for air ambulance charter. The air ambulance certificate is part of the 135 certification for a private charter license.
Depending on the level of care needed for the patient who is being transported, special equipment and medical staff can be provided. For instance, a patient with brain trauma might need special equipment to monitor pressure levels. Another common example would be a patient on a ventilator in need of a respiratory therapist and onboard ventilator.
Med flights are often used for patients who are not able to travel by scheduled commercial operations. People find themselves hospitalized or weak while travelling abroad. Air charter service is available to patients who need to be repatriated. Air charter service, such as Air Ambulance, can arrange with FAA certified air carriers to take patients home or to a hospital where the patient can be properlly cared for. We arrange the ambulance transportation to and from the airports as well.
